Why Milky Cleansers?

Why Milky Cleansers?

How to Choose the Right Milky Cleanser for Your Skin

Not all cleansers are created equal, and the type you choose matters just as much as the ingredients inside it. Foaming and gel cleansers rely on surfactants to create lather, which is effective at lifting away oil and makeup, but that same lathering action can strip the skin's natural lipids along with it, often leaving skin feeling tight, squeaky, or reactive afterward. Micellar waters sit on the opposite end, gentle but sometimes not thorough enough to fully clean the skin at the end of the day.

A milky cleanser sits perfectly in the middle. At Skin & Tonic, we've been saying it for years: never underestimate the importance of the right cleanser. A milky cleanser (Biologique Recherche calls them a "Lait") cleans thoroughly while behaving more like a skincare treatment than a wash, which is exactly why we use them in so many of our facials and home routines.

If you've ever wondered what actually makes a milky cleanser different from a gel or foaming cleanser, or which of Biologique Recherche's four Lait formulas is right for your skin, we made this guide just for you.

Why We Love Milky Cleansers

The short answer is: because a milky cleanser works with your skin barrier instead of against it.

Foaming and gel cleansers rely on strong cleansing ingredients that can strip your skin’s natural oils along with the day's dirt and makeup. This is part of why so many people feel tight or dry after washing their face. A Lait skips that trade-off. It's especially well suited for dry, sensitive, mature, or barrier-compromised skin, though because Biologique Recherche makes a Lait for every Skin Instant, there's a version for oily and congested skin too.

Biologique Recherche’s Lait cleansers are designed to be applied to dry skin. The gentle texture of a milky cleanser soothes the skin, and the lack of water locks the nutrients to your skin, leaving it refreshed and clean. The milk base guarantees optimal skin tolerance without drying or irritating the skin, by providing lipids to protect your skin's natural moisture barrier against external stress factors, which maintains the skin's water balance and preserves its barrier function.

How to Use a Milky Cleanser

Did you know, a milky cleanser isn't used the same way as a foaming or gel cleanser? And, using it the same way can leave you thinking that they don’t work. So, how do you use a milky cleaner?

Apply your Lait cleanser to dry skin, work in and remove. Sounds confusing, right? It's the opposite of what most people are used to, so we have created a helpful step-by-steps guide:

Step One: Start with a completely dry face. No pre-splash of water. Milky cleansers are formulated to work on dry skin, and adding water too early dilutes the formula before it has a chance to do its job.

Step Two: Dispense a small amount into dry hands. A little goes a long way with a Lait so you don't need a handful to get full coverage (If you are used to the feeling of lathering up a foam cleanser, this might feel a little strange to start with, but trust the process!)

Step Three: Massage it into the skin in circular motions, focusing on areas with makeup, sunscreen, or buildup. Take your time here; this is where it is important to be thorough.

Step Four: Remove with a damp cotton pad, warm washcloth, or splash of water. Unlike a foaming cleanser, you're not working up a lather. Instead, you're wiping or rinsing away the milk along with everything it lifted.

Step Five: Follow immediately with your Lotion P50 or your exfoliator and toner of choice. Because BR’s Lait cleansers don't strip your skin, your next step absorbs more effectively.

Which Lait Cleanser Is Right for You?

Biologique Recherche doesn't believe in one-size-fits-all skincare (and nor do we!), which is why there are four distinct milk cleansers, each formulated for a different Skin Instant.

Lait VIP O2: For Urban, Pollution-Exposed Skin

Lait VIP O2 works as an urban shield, cleansing the skin and eliminating particulate pollutants, which can be smaller than the pores of the skin. With its purifying action, Lait VIP O2 eliminates the pollutants that accumulate on the surface of skin tissue and helps skin breathe better and regain its natural radiance.

Best for: anyone regularly exposed to city pollution, or skin that looks dull and congested despite a normal routine.

Here are 4 ways Lait VIP O2 elevates your skincare

Why everyone is talking about Lait VIP O2

Lait E.V.: For Dry, Dehydrated, Mature Skin

Lait E.V. has a rich texture designed to cleanse and restore lipids in the driest areas on the face. It effectively removes impurities and even the most persistent make-up. Its creamy texture is truly comforting and leaves a nourishing veil on the skin. It prevents skin dryness, particularly for mature skin prone to severe dehydration. The skin becomes moisturized, soothed, supple and comfortable alleviating sensations of tightness.

Best for: mature skin, chronically dry skin, or anyone who wants a cleanser that also lifts stubborn makeup.

Lait S.R.: For Oily, Congested Skin

With its breathable, fresh and light gel-cream texture, Lait S.R. removes impurities and excess sebum from the skin's surface, protecting the hydrolipidic film and keeping skin balanced. Lait S.R. removes impurities, unclogs and tightens pores, and balances and mattifies skin.

Best for: oily or combination skin, clogged pores, or skin that tends to look shiny by midday.

Lait Dermo-S: For Sensitive, Reactive Skin

Lait Dermo-S has a light, soft texture to cleanse and remove makeup without causing irritation or redness. Its soothing action limits the skin's reactions to external stress factors and relieves the sensations of discomfort caused by cleansing.

Best for: sensitive, reactive, or redness-prone skin that reacts poorly to most cleansers.

Where Cleansing Fits in Your Routine

A milk cleanser is the start of your routine and the foundation everything else builds on. At Skin & Tonic, we recommend cleansing first, followed by your Lotion P50 or toner of choice, then serums, and finally your moisturizer or cream. Because a Lait doesn't strip the skin, it actually helps your following products absorb better, rather than fighting against a disrupted barrier.

If you're double cleansing, a milk cleanser makes an excellent second step after an oil-based makeup remover, or can be used on its own both morning and night if your skin doesn't need a heavier first cleanse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a milky cleanser if I have oily or acne-prone skin? Yes! You'll just want to reach for the right one. Lait S.R. was formulated specifically for oily and congested skin, removing excess sebum and unclogging pores without over-drying. A common misconception is that milky cleansers are only for dry skin, but Biologique Recherche makes a Lait for every Skin Instant, oily included.

Do I still need a toner if I use a milk cleanser? Yes, and the two work especially well together. Because a Lait doesn't strip the skin the way a foaming cleanser can, your toner (like Lotion P50) is left to actually balance and prep the skin rather than repair damage from cleansing. Skipping toner isn't harmful, but you'll get more out of the full routine by keeping it in.

Is it normal for a milk cleanser to not foam or lather? Yes, completely normal. Milky cleansers work through their creamy, lipid-rich texture rather than lather, which is what makes them gentle enough to use on dry skin in the first place. If you're used to the "squeaky clean" feeling of a foaming cleanser, a Lait will feel different, but that tight, stripped sensation isn't actually a sign of a good cleanse.

How long does a bottle of Lait last with regular use? Because you only need a small, dime-sized amount per use, most clients find a bottle lasts two to three months with twice-daily use. A little genuinely goes further than it looks like it will.

Can I use a milk cleanser to remove makeup, or do I need a separate makeup remover? Lait E.V. in particular is formulated to lift even persistent makeup on its own. For a full face of makeup, we still recommend an oil-based remover first followed by your Lait as a second cleanse, but for everyday makeup, a milk cleanser alone is often enough.

How often should I switch which Lait I use? You don't need to switch at all if your current one is working, but many clients keep two on rotation, for example Lait E.V. through the winter and Lait S.R. through the humid Raleigh summers, since skin needs can shift with the seasons.

Book a Consultation

Not sure which Lait is right for you? Book a consultation with one of our estheticians to find out which of BR's milk cleansers are right for your skin.

Cleansing well is one of the simplest changes you can make to your routine, and it's the one that helps every other product you use work the way it's supposed to. If your current cleanser is leaving your skin tight, dull, or reactive, it might be time for a Lait.
