Men Get Facials Too: Why Men's Skin Deserves a Spot on Our Treatment Table

Men Get Facials Too: Why Men's Skin Deserves a Spot on Our Treatment Table

The men in our lives work hard. They show up every day, they take care of everyone around them, and they rarely take time for their own selfcare. That's exactly why a facial at Skin & Tonic Raleigh makes such a perfect Father's Day gift! If you have spent any amount of time on social media recently, you may have noticed that the beauty standard for men is rising. Skincare is becoming the norm, and men everywhere are paying more attention to their skin, and feeling comfortable doing so. It is exciting to see. So if someone sent you this, consider it a nudge. And if you found it yourself? Even better. Here's everything you need to know about men's facials. Why Do Men Need Facials? Did you know that men' s skin is biologically different from women's skin? Understanding the differences is important because it affects how skin ages, how it reacts, and what it needs. For starters, men's skin is about 25% thicker than women's, with higher collagen density and more active sebaceous glands. That means more oil production, larger pores, and a greater tendency toward congestion. It also means that when the signs of aging do show up, they can appear more suddenly and more dramatically than they do for women, who experience a more gradual decline in collagen over time. In other words, the change can feel fast when it comes. Then there's shaving. Regular shaving is essentially a form of daily exfoliation, which sounds like a good thing, but without the right care around it, it creates a cycle of low-grade inflammation. Razor drag, friction, and the repeated removal of surface skin cells can compromise the skin barrier over time, leading to chronic sensitivity, ingrown hairs, redness, and irritation. If you have a beard, the skin underneath is often the most neglected of all, trapped under facial hair and rarely cleansed or treated properly. Sun exposure is another major factor. Men are statistically less likely to wear SPF daily, and more likely to spend extended time outdoors without protection. Over years and decades, that adds up to accelerated collagen breakdown, hyperpigmentation, and a higher risk of skin cancer. UV damage is cumulative and largely invisible, until it isn't. By the time it shows up on the surface, it has been building for a long time. Add in the effects of stress, which elevates cortisol and drives inflammation, congestion, and accelerated aging, and you have a picture of skin that is working hard and getting very little support in return. The good news? Skin responds quickly and visibly, when it's given the right care. A professional facial doesn't just feel good in the moment. It supports the skin and it’s barrier, regulates oil production, and gives your skin a genuine reset. What to Expect at Your First Facial If you've never had a facial before, it can feel incredibly mysterious. We want to demystify it and share what the experience looks like at Skin & Tonic. You'll start with a consultation so your esthetician can understand your skin, your concerns, and what you're currently using. From there, your facial is customized to what your skin actually needs, not a one-size-fits-all treatment. You can expect steps like deep cleansing, exfoliation, extractions if needed, a targeted mask, and finishing products. It's relaxing, professional, and completely pressure-free. Most first-timers leave wondering what took them so long. Should You Shave Before Your Facial? This one comes up with all of our male customers. And the answer is don't shave the day of your appointment.  Shaving creates micro-abrasions on the skin, and fresh razor irritation means heightened sensitivity right before we start working. We want your skin calm and ready, not freshly irritated. The ideal? You can shave the day before, but please skip it the morning of your appointment. Another question we get a lot is can you get a facial when you have a beard?  Of course you can! Beards are no problem at all. Our estheticians work around facial hair all the time. A beard is never a barrier to a great facial. We'll treat the skin we can access and customize the treatment accordingly. What Men’s Skincare Do We Recommend? We've been obsessed with Lenox & Sixteenth since we brought it into Skin & Tonic, and it turns out this line is an exceptional fit for men. Why? Because it's simple, effective, and has zero fluff. No overwhelming choices. No complicated routines. Just great formulations that do exactly what they say. Lenox & Sixteenth’s Soft Landing Moisturizer If the idea of putting something on your face sounds unappealing, this is the product that changes that. Soft Landing is weightless, non-greasy, and absorbs instantly. It hydrates without heaviness, calms post-shave sensitivity and redness, and supports your skin barrier over time. It does a lot without feeling like it's doing anything, and that is exactly the point. Lenox & Sixteenth’s Laser Serum Dealing with uneven skin tone, congestion, or rough texture from years of sun exposure and skipped skincare? The Laser Serum is a quiet powerhouse. With a triple acid blend of glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acids, it resurfaces gently without irritation. No drama. Just noticeably clearer, smoother skin over time. Biologique Recherche Gel ADN SILKGEN Another moisturizing option comes in the form of Gel ADN SILKGEN Refreshing Moisturizing Face Fluid from Biologique Recherche. This ultra-light, fluid moisturizer absorbs instantly, leaves zero residue, and delivers real hydration without any heaviness. It's deeply refreshing, which makes it a perfect post-shave step. For men who run warm, spend time outdoors, or simply don't want to feel like they have anything on their skin, Gel ADN SILKGEN is the one. Suntegrity Guardian Angel Super Peptide Sunscreen SPF 50 We talk about SPF constantly, and for good reason. But we also know that the number one reason men skip sunscreen is because they hate the way it feels - thick, greasy, uncomfortable. We get it. Guardian Angel SPF 50 by Suntegrity solves that issue. This is a broad spectrum SPF 50 mineral sunscreen in a lightweight formula that goes on clean, absorbs fast, and leaves no white cast. It protects against both UVA and UVB rays without clogging pores or sitting heavy on the skin. For men who spend time outdoors, play sport, or simply want protection without the fuss, this is the easiest possible way to make SPF a daily habit. And given everything we just told you about what years of unprotected sun exposure does to your skin? This one is non-negotiable. After Facial Care for Men Imagine this: You have just had your facial, your skin is freshly treated, hydrated and feeling great. Now, here are a few simple things to keep in mind to help you maintain that post facial feeling: Skip shaving for at least 24 hours afterward if you can Wear SPF, all year round Keep it simple for the first day or two: a gentle moisturizer and sunscreen is all you need We'll walk you through everything at your appointment, so there's no guesswork once you leave the studio. Yes, Men Really Do Get Facials Too Something really lovely has been happening at Skin & Tonic. More and more of our clients are bringing their husbands and partners in, sometimes as a gift, sometimes because they finally talked them into it. And almost without exception, those men become regulars. It makes complete sense to us. Once you experience what your skin can actually feel and look like with professional care, it's hard to go back to splashing water and calling it a routine. Men are paying more attention to their skin than ever before, and we are here for it. It's not vanity. It's self-respect. We love seeing it. And we love being the place where it starts. Whether this was a gift or you found your way here on your own, we're glad you're here. Father's Day is a great excuse to start, but great skin doesn't have a season. Book your first facial at Skin & Tonic. Have questions about what treatment is right for you? Just ask us. We are always happy to help you find the perfect fit. Xoxo, Robin & Lori

Your Summer Skincare Routine, Simplified.

Your Summer Skincare Routine, Simplified.

Summer is coming, and more products does not mean better skin. its all about using the right products for your skin at the right time of the year. Summer is a season that can pose different challenges for different skin types. And, at Skin & Tonic Raleigh, we believe that simplifying your routine for summer can be the right move. Done right, a streamlined summer routine outshines a complicated one any day.  How Does Summer Change Your Skincare Routine? Your skin is not a static organ. It responds constantly to its environment, and summer brings a whole new set of variables to manage. Humidity increases, which means your skin holds onto more moisture naturally. Translation: that heavy winter creme that saved you in January? it just may not work for you during the summer. Oil production tends to increase with heat, which can cause congestion if you don't adjust. Sun exposure ramps up significantly, even on overcast days and even during that quick walk from the car to the coffee shop. And your barrier, which spent all winter recovering from dry air and indoor heat, is now facing UV stress, sweat, and environmental exposure. The biggest mistake we see every summer? People not adjusting their routines. They keep layering the same products from February and wonder why their skin is breaking out, looking shiny in the wrong way, or feeling heavy. The weather has shifted. Your skin has shifted. Your routine should too. Summer Ready Skincare SPF: The Non-Negotiable We will never stop talking about this, because the evidence is too strong to ignore. Daily SPF is the single most important thing you can do for your skin, both for today's appearance and for long-term skin health. UV exposure drives pigmentation, collagen breakdown, inflammation, and accelerated aging. Spring and summer are when pigmentation begins to deepen if protection isn't consistent. This is the season to lock in the habit. And, if you’re not sure whether mineral or chemical sunscreen is right for you, read our recent article. If you’re looking for a great mineral SPF, we're currently loving the Solara Suncare line. Solara is redefining what mineral sunscreen can be. Think clean, zinc-based formulas that meet strict European standards, with clinically studied, plant-powered active ingredients. Their approach is wellness-first and science-backed, which aligns perfectly with how we think about skin health at skin&tonic. It’s time to make a commitment to your skin. No more forgetting. No more only doing it if you go outside. Commit to SPF every morning and your skin will thank you. Light Preparation: Boost Your SPF’s Protection Your skin is exposed to light every single day, and light exposure is the number one driver of skin quality degradation over time. Until recently, we could only focus on protection in the form of SPF. But what if we could also prepare the skin to be stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to handle light exposure from within? This is the new approach Biologique Recherche has found with Serum Spectral. This innovative serum targets four mechanisms of photo-resilience: strengthening the barrier to resist damage, supporting the removal of damaged cells, activating the skin's inner reviving mechanisms, and reinforcing antioxidant activity to limit stress on the skin.  The results are measurable: 100% antioxidant efficacy, plus visible improvements in radiance and skin tone evenness. Serum Spectral doesn't replace your SPF. It works with it, preparing your skin for light exposure and increasing your overall light protection. Keep it Light: Hydration Without the Weight Summer skin definitely needs hydration. It just needs it differently than in the winter. When you're shopping for a summer moisturizer, look for a few key ingredients. Humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin draw moisture into the skin without sitting heavy on top of it. Polyglutamic acid is another wonderful ingredient as it actually delivers 4x more hydration than hyaluronic acid and holds it there longer.  You also want to look for barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, or peptides that help your skin retain the moisture it absorbs. If your skin is dry AND dehydrated you may still want a heavier moisturizer in the summer, but if your preference is to move to a lighter option in the day, this is the time of year to do it. You can, and should continue to use your more intensive moisturizer overnight. If you need to change your daytime moisturizer, do a simple texture test: it should absorb quickly, leave no residue, and your skin should feel comfortable (not tight or greasy) within a few minutes of application. This is where Creme M.E.C. from Biologique Recherche has genuinely changed the game for us. It is super light, but packs a nourishing, hydrating punch that provides that signature BR glow without the heavy texture of a traditional creme. As Robin puts it: "You need so little, but you will feel like your skin has just downed a really tall glass of water." Travel Simplified: The Lenox and Sixteenth Solution This one is for our frequent travelers, our keep-it-easy clients, and anyone who has ever tried cramming twelve skincare products into a quart-sized bag. We added Lenox and Sixteenth to our shelves for numerous reasons, one of which was to give you options to take when you travel. We heard you say: "I travel constantly and can't take everything with me." "I want results without a nine-step routine." "I need something streamlined." Lenox and Sixteenth delivers on all of it. The products are available in regular and travel sizes, which means your routine stays consistent whether you're home or halfway across the world. The Laser Serum handles exfoliation and clarity, The Preservationist brings the antioxidant and brightening support of a Vitamin C serum, and Soft Landing moisturizes and repairs the barrier without any heaviness. Three products. Beautiful results. Easy to pack. Perfect for streamlined summer skincare. If you've been wanting to simplify, this is where we'd start. The Best Summer Facial You Haven't Heard Of Simplified doesn't stop at your at-home routine. It also means working smarter in the treatment room. The oxygenating Masque VIP O2 facial is our seasonal hero right now, and for good reason. When skin looks tired, flat, or congested from heat and environmental exposure, this treatment brings it back to life. The reformulated Masque VIP O2 supports oxygen delivery to the skin, improves brightness, and helps your skin recover from the stress it faces just from living your life in summer. The result is skin that looks refreshed, clearer, and visibly more alive. Seasonal transitions are when professional treatments are most impactful. Your skin is biologically adapting right now. Supporting that shift with the right treatment prevents the congestion and pigmentation concerns that tend to show up if we're not proactive. The Simplified Summer Skincare Routine In summer, your skin doesn't need more. It needs the right things, applied consistently, adjusted to your skin’s needs right now. That looks different for everyone. Some of you need to lighten up your moisturizer. Some need to finally commit to a daily SPF habit. Some are ready to add a preparation step like Serum Spectral that makes everything else in your routine work harder. Some just need a professional set of eyes to tell you what to keep, what to swap, and what to let go of entirely. If you're not sure where your routine needs adjusting, that's exactly what we're here for. A quick conversation with your esthetician can cut through the noise and give you a clear, simple plan that will truly work for your skin this summer. Great skin this summer isn't about doing more. It's about doing the right things, consistently, with a little professional guidance to keep you on track. Stay glowing, Robin & Lori

The Only Facial Gift Card Guide You Need This Mothers Day

The Only Facial Gift Card Guide You Need This Mothers Day

Mother's Day is around the corner, and you want to give her something she will actually use. Something that feels thoughtful and that celebrates her. If you're here wondering if $50 is too low, if $200 is too much, and whether she will even know what to do with it once she has it, you're in the right place. The number matters way less than you think. What matters is understanding what that number buys, and making sure the person receiving it feels seen, not just gifted. At Skin & Tonic Raleigh, thoughtful is what we do best. Let us walk you through exactly how to make a facial gift card special. Shop Gift Cards Is a Facial Gift Card a Good Gift? Absolutely! A gift card paired with a note that says "I booked you a facial, you deserve to relax and enjoy some ‘you’ time" is thoughtful and deeply personal. No matter the dollar amount, it’s the thought behind it. When you give a skincare gift card from a studio like Skin & Tonic Raleigh, you are not just handing someone money. You are giving them an hour to themselves. Time with an expert who will assess her skin, answer her questions, and make her feel taken care of. That is not a small thing. Especially for the women in our lives who spend most of their energy taking care of everyone else. Facial gift cards are perfect for giving a thoughtful and memorable experience.  How to Make a Facial Gift Card a Meaningful Gift A professional facial is not just about looking good, though it does help with that. It is about having someone who knows your skin, who will pay attention to it, and who will help you understand what it needs. For a lot of women, that hour in the treatment room is one of the only hours in the week where someone is focused entirely on them. Not their to-do list. Not their family. Just. Them. When you give a Skin & Tonic gift card, that is the gift you are giving. And the best part? Our estheticians customize every single facial based on what the skin needs that day. That means there is no wrong choice. You do not have to figure out what treatment to book or whether you picked the right one. She shows up, we assess, and we take care of the rest. The gift card is just the key to the door. How Much Should You Spend on a Facial Gift Card? This is a question we get asked all the time, and we want you to be able to choose with confidence. So, here is our advice on what different gift card amounts typically cover.  $250 to $500+: A Full Facial ServiceAt this range, she can explore some of the more advanced treatments, like our Estheticians Choice facial (perfect for someone who isn’t already a regular) or our People’s Choice Facial (an absolute favorite among our customers!). If you really want to treat her, this is where it happens. It says: I want you to have the full experience, not just a taste of it. $50 to $100 +: The ExtraThis is a wonderful amount, especially if she is already a regular client who has a service she loves. At this range, she can apply it toward an add-on treatment like an eye or lip treatment, or a relaxing scalp massage. Or, she can put it towards a retail product she has been wanting to try, or, a future appointment. It’s not a full treatment on its own, but as a complement to something she already has planned? Perfect. $150+: The Quick Fix ExperienceAt this amount, she can book a 30-minute Quick Fix Facial, experience the pampering and relaxation from start to finish, and leave genuinely glowing. If she has never had a professional facial before, this is a great way to give her a complete first experience!  Our gift cards can be purchased in any dollar amount you choose. No matter the amount, our team will make sure she gets the most out of every dollar. That is part of what we do. Click here to view our in-studio services and pricing How to Choose the Right Facial Gift Card Based on Who You Are Gifting It To Not every recipient is the same, and the thoughtful gift acknowledges that. If she has never had a professional facial before: Start with one of our Quick Fix Facials or the Estheticians Choice Facial, and consider pairing it with a quick note saying something like, "I think you will love this. They will walk you through everything." A first facial can feel a little intimidating if you are not sure what to expect. Consider giving her a link to or print out of our Pre-Facial blog post to help her understand what to expect and feel more comfortable. Removing that uncertainty is itself a gift. If she is already a regular client: She likely has a service she loves or a product she is running low on. In this case, even a smaller amount goes a long way because she already knows exactly what she wants. You’re just covering the tab. If she has a specific skin concern: Maybe she has mentioned wanting to do something about sun damage, or she has been talking about needing better hydration. A gift card gives her the freedom to address that with professional guidance, without feeling like you are pointing out a "problem.". That is a dignified way to give. If she is a busy mom who never prioritizes herself: Go higher than you think you need to. Give her enough that she feels like the trip is truly for her, not a quick errand. And if you can, make the reservation for her. The biggest barrier for most women is not money, it’s carving out the time in a busy schedule. Booking it for her and letting her know you have the kids covered removes that barrier entirely and shows her how much you care. A Facial Gift Card is the Perfect Gift Whether you are shopping for your mom, your best friend, your sister, or yourself (no judgment here!), we make it easy. Gift cards are available online and in the studio, in any amount you choose. If you want to pair it with a product recommendation or need help deciding what amount makes sense for your special person, just reach out. We are happy to help you get it right. Shop Gift Cards And if you want her appointment to already be on the books when she opens her card, we can help with that too. Remember, the best gift is the one that requires absolutely nothing from her except showing up. Book a Facial Help her glow this Mother's Day. Robin & Lori XOXO

The Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum Is Here: A Smarter Way to Resurface Your Skin.

The Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum Is Here: A Smarter Way to Resurface Your Skin.

Okay, the name is bold: The Laser Serum by Lenox and Sixteenth. And no, it's not trying to replace an in-studio laser treatment. But, it is designed to give you smoother, brighter, more refined skin in a way that's controlled, intelligent, and barrier-conscious.  Which is exactly why we brought it into Skin & Tonic. Because when it comes to exfoliation, we don't do reckless. We do strategic. Want to try it for yourself? Shop the Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum What the Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum Actually Is The Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum is a triple-acid concentrate designed to resurface, smooth, and brighten, without tipping your skin into irritation. It works because of its intelligent acid blend. Rather than relying on one aggressive exfoliant, it combines multiple acids that work at different levels of the skin. Here's what makes it special: Glycolic Acid: A gold-standard AHA that exfoliates the surface of the skin, improving texture and radiance. It helps dissolve dead skin buildup so everything looks smoother and more reflective. Lactic Acid: A gentler AHA that exfoliates and hydrates simultaneously. This helps maintain balance while still encouraging cell turnover, which is huge for preventing that tight, stripped feeling of lower quality exfoliants. Salicylic Acid: A BHA that penetrates deep into pores, making this serum especially helpful for congestion, breakouts, and uneven texture. Together, these three acids create multi-level exfoliation: surface smoothing, pore refinement, tone brightening, and breakout support. It's controlled resurfacing, not chaos. Who Is the Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum For? This serum is ideal for anyone dealing with: Acne-prone skin Congestion and clogged pores Uneven texture Dullness Early signs of aging Pigmentation concerns If you're already investing in professional treatments at Skin & Tonic, the Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum is the kind of at-home support that genuinely enhances those results between appointments. It's especially great for clients who want smoother, clearer skin without needing aggressive treatments. That said, like all exfoliating products, proper use and proper pairing matter. This isn't something you layer with five other actives because TikTok said so. We’ll help you work it into your routine strategically. Why We're Excited About It at Skin & Tonic Here's the thing: we're careful with acids. Because when exfoliation is overdone, we see the consequences in our treatment room. Compromised barriers. Persistent redness. Breakouts that won't heal. Pigmentation that worsens instead of fades. What we love about Lenox and Sixteenth is that even when they formulate something powerful, they do it with balance in mind. The Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum is potent, but it's not reckless. And that fits perfectly into the Skin & Tonic philosophy: strengthen the skin, resurface strategically, and never sacrifice the barrier for a quick glow. Full Size and Travel Size, Because Results Love Consistency The Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum comes in both full size and travel size, and we love that. When you find a resurfacing product that works for your skin, the last thing you want is to interrupt your progress every time you travel. Consistency with exfoliation is everything so, instead of skipping it for weeks, focus on steady, intentional use for the best results. Having a travel option means your routine stays intact wherever you are, and that's how results actually compound over time. Where the Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum Fits in Your Routine This serum works beautifully: In the evening On clean, dry skin Followed by a barrier-supportive moisturizer Don't forget daily SPF in the mornings (non-negotiable) As we head into warmer weather and higher UV levels in Raleigh, exfoliation needs to be balanced with protection. Resurfacing, plus SPF, plus antioxidants, equals smooth, bright, resilient skin. That's the long game we play at Skin & Tonic. The Bottom Line The Lenox and Sixteenth Laser Serum isn't about aggressive peeling. It's about refined texture, clearer pores, a brighter tone, and intelligent exfoliation that works with your skin rather than against it. We're excited to welcome another beautifully formulated product from Lenox and Sixteenth into the studio, especially one that bridges the gap between professional treatments and home care so seamlessly. If you're curious whether this triple-acid concentrate is right for your skin type, bring it up at your next appointment at Skin & Tonic. We'll guide you on frequency, layering, and how to keep your barrier strong while you resurface. Because smooth skin isn't about doing more things. It's about doing the right thing. Meet Sunscreen's New Best Friend: Biologique Recherche’s Serum Spectral.

Meet Sunscreen's New Best Friend: Biologique Recherche’s Serum Spectral.

You've been wearing SPF. You've been consistent. You've been doing everything right. And yet, your skin is still aging from light exposure every single day. It’s a struggle we all face, and it’s the exact problem Biologique Recherche set out to solve with their latest product. It turns out that protection alone isn't enough. Your skin doesn't just need to be shielded from light. It needs to be prepared for it from within. That's exactly why we're so excited to introduce Serum Spectral from Biologique Recherche to the Skin & Tonic lineup. It’s revolutionary, and a total game-changer for sun protection! What Is Serum Spectral? Serum Spectral is a daily serum designed to strengthen your skin's ability to adapt to light exposure from within. Not UV exposure alone, but all light, all day, every day. Light exposure is one of the biggest factors affecting skin quality over time because your skin is exposed to some form of light from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep. Until now, skincare has responded to that reality with one answer: protection. Think SPF, antioxidants, and shade. All important, and all still very necessary. But Biologique Recherche started to ask new questions: what if the skin could be stronger from the inside? What if it could adapt, resist, and recover more effectively? Serum Spectral was built to answer that question. It's the first step in what BR calls photo-resilience, and it works in synergy with your SPF helping prepare your skin for exposure, not instead of your SPF. The Four R’s of Serum Spectral’s Light Protection Serum Spectral targets four distinct mechanisms of skin resilience, all working together to fortify your skin against light-induced damage: Resist: strengthens the barrier so it can scatter light and push back against damage before it sets in.  Remove: supports your skin's ability to clear out damaged cells, keeping your complexion looking fresh and even over time.  Revive: promotes the skin's inner recovery systems to reduce the effects of daily light exposure. Reinforce: boosts your antioxidant activity to limit oxidative stress, the invisible culprit behind so much of what we see as "aging." The result is skin that is stronger, more resilient, more comfortable, and visibly more radiant. In clinical testing, Serum Spectral demonstrated 100% antioxidant efficacy, a 16% improvement in skin radiance, and an 18% improvement in skin homogeneity. Those are numbers we don't take lightly. The Ingredients Behind the Science Biologique Recherche built this formula around three extraordinary adaptogens, each chosen because of how they survive in nature. Indirubin is derived from the indigo plant, and it's only produced when the plant itself is under environmental stress. That resilience is exactly what it brings to your skin, reinforcing melanin's natural role as a protective shield and helping the skin adapt rather than react. Lingonberry is native to the Arctic, where it thrives under intense light and extreme cold. Its cells are exceptionally rich in polyphenols and act as a powerful antioxidant adaptogen. Schisandra berry has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries for its ability to enhance the body's resistance to stress. It helps support the removal and recycling of damaged cells, which is one of the most underappreciated pieces of long-term skin health. Together, these ingredients don't just sit on the surface. They work within the skin's own systems to build resilience over time. Who Should Use Serum Spectral? The short answer: everyone! Serum Spectral is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Light exposure doesn't discriminate, and neither should your skincare. It's especially meaningful for anyone who is already committed to their SPF routine (great work, keep that up!) but wants to take their light protection strategy further. It's also a natural addition if you're working on pigmentation, radiance, or skin texture, because each of those concerns is deeply tied to how your skin manages light-induced stress over time. If you've been in to see us, you already know how much we talk about building a foundation of healthy, resilient skin rather than chasing quick fixes. Serum Spectral fits that philosophy completely. How to Use It Apply Serum Spectral in the morning year-round, as your final quintessential serum before moisturizer. During the day, follow with SPF. It's that simple. This isn't a seasonal product or a once-in-a-while treatment. It's designed to become a consistent, daily step, because photo-resilience is built over time, not overnight. Your SPF blocks what it can on the outside. Serum Spectral strengthens what's on the inside. Together, they're doing something that neither can do alone. Want to Try Serum Spectral? We are genuinely excited to introduce Serum Spectral to you. It represents a shift in how we think about sun and light care, and it fits beautifully into the kind of intentional, long-term approach to skin health that we have always believed in. As always, if you are not sure whether Serum Spectral is right for your skin, we are here to walk you through it. Stop by, grab a sample, send us a message, visit our online store, or bring it up at your next appointment. No guesswork required! Stay glowing, Robin & Lori

Why Skin & Tonic Is Raleigh's Most Trusted Facial Studio

Why Skin & Tonic Is Raleigh's Most Trusted Facial Studio

You could walk into any spa in Raleigh and get a facial. A relaxing hour, some nice-smelling products, maybe a hot towel. And honestly? That's fine. But, if you've ever left a facial feeling like nothing really changed, like your skin looked the same, maybe a little pinker, and the esthetician spent half the appointment trying to sell you a membership, you already know there's a difference between a spa facial and a skincare facial. That difference is exactly what Skin & Tonic has been built on for more than 28 years. We're not a day spa. We're not a med spa. We're a dedicated esthetic facial studio in Raleigh, NC and we've spent nearly three decades quietly practicing the kind of skin care that doesn’t need flashy gimmicks. That’s because our results (and our clients) speak for themselves.   No pushy upsells. No one-size-fits-all treatments. No injections. No drama. Only dedicated estheticians who believe that your skin deserves true care. Decades of Success in Raleigh Is Not an Accident, It’s Experience. Robin and Lori have each been in the skincare industry for over 28 years. In an industry that trends harder than almost any other, that kind of longevity doesn't happen by luck. It happens because clients come back. And clients come back because their skin is genuinely better. During this time, many Triangle-area skincare and medi spas have come and gone, but Skin & Tonic has not only continued to serve the area, we have grown to become one of the top twenty partners of Biologique Recherche in the country! And in recent years, we’ve grown our team of licensed and experienced estheticians to better serve our clients, making it easier than ever to schedule an incredible facial, shop in person, or ask us for a product recommendation.  One client put it simply: "Best facial I ever have had. And I have had decades of facials." We are blessed to have many devoted clients who have been with us for more than 15 years. That's not just one good day. That's the Skin & Tonic experience. Skin & Tonic was built on the belief that great skin isn't a moment, it's a practice. We're not here to give you a single dramatic result that doesn't last and send you on your way. We're here to be your long-term skin partner, adjusting treatments as your skin changes, guiding your home routine, and educating you along the way. This philosophy (which the skincare world is now calling "longevity skincare") has been the foundation of Skin & Tonic since day one. We just call it taking care of your skin the way it deserves! No Sales Pitches. Our Results Speak for Themselves.  We know this matters, because we hear it regularly. People come to us having had experiences at other places where the appointment felt like a sales pitch with a facial tacked on. Memberships pushed before you've even decided if you liked the treatment. Products recommended whether they fit your skin or not.  Let’s be clear. That is not how we operate. At Skin & Tonic, if something isn't right for your skin, we'll tell you. If a product isn't going to make a meaningful difference for you, we'll find something that will. Our reputation is built on trust, and trust is not built by selling people things they don't need. We offer free samples so clients can give our products a try before purchasing. Simply stop by and ask. Your Destination for the Most Relaxing Facial in Raleigh Skin & Tonic was founded by Robin and Lori, both licensed estheticians since 1998 and both still actively working with clients in the treatment rooms today. That's not something you find everywhere. The vibe once you enter our studio on Creedmoor Road is a blend of comfortable luxury meets Southern hospitality. Walking in feels like you’ve just taken a deep breath, left the world outside, and have entered a space created just for you. Every treatment at Skin & Tonic is delivered by a licensed, trained esthetician who knows your skin. Not a rotating staff member reading from a treatment notes card. Robin comes from a background in art and brings that same creative eye to skincare. She's the one constantly exploring what's new, what's worthy of our shelves, and what actually belongs on your skin. She believes deeply in the connection between your body, your stress, your food, and the skin you're living in, and that shows up in every treatment she delivers. Lori is the calm you feel the moment you walk through the door. An esthetician first and operations director second, she has a gift for meeting you exactly where you are (in your life, your routine, and your skincare goals) and building something that genuinely works for you. Her approach is efficient without ever feeling rushed. Together, Robin and Lori have built a team that carries that same standard throughout the studio. One recent customer said “the knowledge and care was beyond my expectations!”. This is the kind of experience we strive to deliver to all of our clients. Our esthetician Amal has been described by clients as “a true partner in my skin healing journey” and Breeanna’s clients say they leave every appointment "completely relaxed and absolutely glowing". Abbey recently helped a client achieve amazing results "I'm even getting compliments on how glowy my skin is, which I have never experienced before." Every person on our team was chosen with care, and every client who walks in experiences that first hand. Proven All-Natural Products We Use Ourselves We test before we recommend. Always. When a product makes it onto our shelves, it's because we've used it ourselves, vetted the formulations, and genuinely believe it will make a difference for your skin. When something doesn't meet that bar, it doesn't make the cut, no matter how good the pitch is. When we do recommend something (a product, a treatment, a new brand we've added to our shelves) it's because we've tested it ourselves, used it in our treatment rooms, and genuinely believe it's going to help you. Robin brought PAUME home from vacation before ever putting it on our shelves. Lori added Creme VIP O2 to her own daily routine before recommending it to a single client. That's just how we work. And our clients notice. “BR is as amazing as it is billed.” “Lenox and Sixteenth made a noticeable difference in my skin almost immediately! My skin is plumper, my redness and fine lines have improved, and my old acne marks have even started lightening in just a few short weeks!” If you're ever curious about what we're seeing working in our treatment rooms or what might work for your skin, just ask. We'll give you an honest answer. And, if something isn't right for you, we'll tell you. Looking for the Best Facial in Raleigh?  If you're looking for a relaxing spa day with candles and cucumber water, we're probably not your place (though your skin will feel incredible, and we do have a lovely studio!). Skin & Tonic is for people who care about the ingredients used on their skin and who want to work with professionals who take it as seriously as they do. We’re for clients who want honest guidance, not a hard sell. We’re for people who want to understand why something is being recommended, not just be handed a bag of products at checkout. We're here for anyone who has ever felt like their skincare wasn't working and wondered if there was a better way. There is. And we've been practicing it for nearly 30 years. If you’re not sure, take a look at our Google reviews (just scroll down!) or, see what our clients are saying about us. @lidi.aaaa Can’t get over how good the face massage was!! #raleigh #facial ♬ original sound - Lidia     At Skin & Tonic Raleigh, You’re Welcomed Whether you're brand new to professional skincare, are new to the Raleigh area, or you've been getting facials for years and are ready for something more intentional, we'd love to meet you and your skin. Our studio is located in Raleigh, NC, and our estheticians are here to guide you, not sell to you. Book a facial, pop in with questions, or reach out online. We'll take it from there. Because great skin isn't luck. It's practice. And we've been practicing for a very long time. Xoxo, Robin & Lori

Lotion P50: The Complete Guide to Biologique Recherche's Cult Classic

Lotion P50: The Complete Guide to Biologique Recherche's Cult Classic

Lotion P50 is a cult-status exfoliating toner by Biologique Recherche that balances, exfoliates, and preps the skin in a single step. It is one of the most talked-about products in professional skincare, and for good reason. But with multiple versions available, knowing which Lotion P50 is right for your skin is where most people get stuck. This guide breaks down everything you need to know. What Is Lotion P50? Lotion P50 is Biologique Recherche's flagship exfoliating lotion, used after cleansing to rebalance the skin's pH, refine texture, support cell turnover, and prepare the skin to absorb everything that follows. It is not a toner in the traditional sense. It works on a biochemical level, supporting the skin's natural renewal process rather than simply refreshing or toning the surface. It has been an essential in professional skincare routines for decades, and it remains one of the most recommended products by estheticians worldwide, including here at skin & tonic. What Does Lotion P50 Actually Do? This is where people are often surprised. Lotion P50 is not just exfoliation. The formula works on several levels simultaneously: Exfoliation: A blend of acids encourages the gentle shedding of dead skin cells, revealing brighter, smoother skin underneath without the harshness of physical scrubs. Rebalancing: Lotion P50 helps normalize the skin's pH after cleansing, which supports a healthy barrier and makes everything applied afterward more effective. Purifying: It helps regulate sebum production and minimize the appearance of pores, making it really effective for congested or oily skin. Barrier support: Unlike many exfoliants that strip and sensitize, Lotion P50 is formulated to respect the skin's barrier function, not compromise it. The result, with consistent use, is skin that looks more refined, feels more balanced, and responds better to the rest of your routine. Need to know the science? You can find it here. Who Should Use Lotion P50? Lotion P50 is suitable for a wide range of skin types and concerns, but the key is to find the right version.  Since each Lotion P50 formula solves different skin challenges, we start with a skin consultation to identify your biggest skin concerns.  Generally speaking, Lotion P50 works well for: Skin that looks dull or uneven in texture Congested or breakout-prone skin Skin dealing with pigmentation or uneven tone Skin that feels "stuck" and not responding to products the way it used to Anyone wanting to support long-term skin health and cell renewal Lotion P50 is not a one-size-fits-all product. Everyone's skin needs change with the seasons of the year and the seasons of life. Having a professional who can help identify these changes and adjust your routine accordingly is game changing, and Lotion P50 is one of those products where that guidance makes a real difference. Want to learn more about the anti-aging benefits of Lotion P50? Read this article!   Lotion P50 Comparison: Which Version Is Right For You? This is the question we get asked most often. Here's a straightforward breakdown of the range. P50 Original P50V P50W P50T P50 PIGM 400 Best for Normal, oily, combination skin Dry, sensitive, or mature skin Sensitive or reactive skin, first-time P50 users Very sensitive skin, low tolerance for actives Pigmentation, uneven tone, post-summer skin Key focus Exfoliation, purifying, balancing Gentle exfoliation, hydration, barrier support Gentle renewal, pH balance, hydration Vitamin-enriched exfoliation with mattifying effect Brightening, melanin regulation, tone correction Intensity Moderate to strong Light to moderate Very light Gentlest overall Moderate Notable ingredients AHAs, BHA, sulfur AHAs, vitamins, no sulfur No sulfur, balancing actives Niacinamide, lactic acid, allantoin, no AHAs Niacinamide, AHAs, brightening actives P50 is the original. It is the most active version and works beautifully for skin that can tolerate a stronger exfoliant. If you're oily, congested, or have been using Lotion P50 for a while, this is often the go-to. P50V is a sulfur free formulation of the original, offering a slightly more nourishing feel. It was developed for drier, more sensitive, or mature skin, and is also a great choice during colder months when the skin's barrier needs more support. P50W is crafted specifically for sensitive and reactive skin types. It exfoliates, purifies, and hydrates while maintaining the skin's natural pH balance. If you love the idea of Lotion P50 but have been hesitant because of sensitivity, P50W is a great starting point. P50T is the newest addition to the P50 line. Vitamin-enriched and moisture-supporting, it now offers the most gentle exfoliation available in the P50 line while simultaneously hydrating and delivering a mattifying result. It is specifically formulated to minimize the discomfort sometimes associated with exfoliation, making it ideal for those who have very low tolerance for actives. P50 PIGM 400 is the brightening-focused version. If pigmentation, sun damage, or uneven skin tone is your primary concern, this is the one for you. It contains melanin-inhibiting actives that work alongside the exfoliation to target discoloration at a deeper level. Not sure which one is right for you? That's exactly what we're here to help with!Come and visit us in store. We can assess your skin and help you understand which Lotion P50 is right for you! How To Incorporate Lotion P50 Into Your Routine Lotion P50 is simple to use, but there are a few things worth knowing to get the most out of it. Step 1: Cleanse your skin as normal and pat dry. Step 2: Apply a small amount of Lotion P50 to a cotton pad and dab gently across the face and neck in an upward motion. Avoid the eye area. Do not rinse off or rub in. Step 3: Follow immediately with the rest of your routine: serum, moisturizer, SPF in the morning. Frequency: Start with every other day and build up to daily use as your skin adjusts. Some people use it twice daily, but once a day is effective for most. Timing: Lotion P50 can be used in the morning or evening. If you're using other actives like retinoids, speak to your esthetician about how to layer correctly. We created a detailed guide on how to incorporate Lotion P50 into your routine. Read it here. Common Mistakes With Lotion P50  Using too much. A little goes a very long way. A few drops on a cotton pad is all you need. Saturating the pad and going over the skin multiple times is unnecessary and can cause irritation. Expecting instant results. Lotion P50 is a long game product. You may notice smoother texture fairly quickly, but the real results, more even tone, refined pores, clearer skin, build over months of consistent use. Skipping moisturizer after. Lotion P50 exfoliates and balances, but it does not moisturize. Always follow with a moisturizer to support the barrier. Using it alongside too many other actives at once. If you're also using a retinoid, strong vitamin C, or other exfoliating acids, layering everything on at once can overwhelm the skin. This is where professional guidance really matters. When NOT To Use Lotion P50 Lotion P50 is a well-tolerated product for most skin types, but there are situations where we'd recommend pausing or adjusting: Active breakouts or open skin: Avoid applying directly to broken or inflamed areas. Immediately post-treatment: After certain professional treatments, your esthetician will advise you on when to reintroduce Lotion P50 into your routine. Very sensitized or compromised barrier: If your skin is reactive, tight, or irritated, start with P50V or hold off until the barrier is repaired. A tingling sensation with Lotion P50 is normal for some, but persistent redness or discomfort is a signal to reassess. If you're on Accutane: Consult your dermatologist and your esthetician before using any exfoliating products. Frequently Asked Questions Is Lotion P50 suitable for sensitive skin? It depends on the sensitivity. P50T is the gentlest version and is often well tolerated by sensitive skin types. We always recommend starting slowly and checking in with your esthetician before adding it to your routine. Does Lotion P50 make your skin purge? Some clients do experience a short adjustment period, particularly if their skin is congested. This is not the same as a reaction. If you're unsure whether what you're experiencing is normal, reach out to us and we'll help you assess. Can I use Lotion P50 every day? Yes, many people do. We recommend building up gradually, starting every other day, and increasing frequency as your skin adjusts. What's the difference between Lotion P50 and a regular toner? A traditional toner primarily refreshes or preps the skin after cleansing. P50 goes significantly further, exfoliating, rebalancing pH, purifying, and supporting barrier health simultaneously. They are not the same category of product. How long before I see results with Lotion P50? Most clients notice smoother texture within a few weeks. More significant changes to tone, pigmentation, and pore appearance typically build over 6 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Which Lotion P50 should I start with if I've never used it before? That depends entirely on your skin. This is genuinely one of those questions where a conversation with your esthetician will save you a lot of guesswork. Lotion P50 is one of those products that, once you find the right version for your skin, tends to become non-negotiable. The key is starting with the right one, using it correctly, and giving it time to work. If you're ready to find your Lotion P50 match, we're here to help. Pre Facial Prep: What To Do Before Your Facial.

Pre Facial Prep: What To Do Before Your Facial.

A question we get all the time from both first-timers and facial veterans is “What should I be doing pre facial?” We get it, you want to make sure you do what you can to get the most out of your facial by doing the right things before you arrive. Our answer surprises most people. There is nothing special you need to do before your facial. And honestly, doing things differently may actually upset your skin and have the opposite effect. Once you are in the treatment room however, there are a few things that actually do matter and that we will ask you so that we can make your treatment safer, more effective, and a whole lot more relaxing. The Most Common Pre Facial Question: Do You Need To Wash Your Face First? No. Please don't feel like you need to show up scrubbed and bare faced. If you're coming straight from work with a full face of makeup, that's completely fine. If you've been wearing SPF all day, gold star for you. We'll cleanse your skin as the first step of your treatment, the way we always do, using products suited to your skin on that day. In other words: your esthetician does not expect you to arrive with "perfect" skin. There's no test here. There's no grading. This is your time to relax, and we want you to walk in exactly as you are. Your Pre Facial Checklist: What Actually Matters While you don't need a pre facial skincare routine, there are a handful of things we genuinely want to know about going into your appointment. These aren't hoops to jump through. They're just helpful context that keeps your skin safe and your results strong. MedicationsCertain medications affect how your skin behaves and responds to treatment. If you're currently taking Accutane (or have taken it within the past year), we'll need to adjust your treatment, as this medication makes the skin much more sensitive and reactive. Topical retinoids like Retin-A or tretinoin are also worth mentioning, as these can increase sensitivity and affect how we approach exfoliation. When in doubt, just tell us what you're taking and when your medications change. We'll ask about it at your appointment too, but flagging it ahead of time helps us plan your treatment properly. PregnancyIf you're pregnant or think you might be, please let us know. Several treatment methods and active ingredients are not recommended during pregnancy, so we want to make sure everything we're using is appropriate for where you are right now. This is not a reason to skip your facial, it's just a reason to communicate so we can customize safely. Recent Sun ExposureIf you've had significant sun exposure in the days before your appointment, fresh sunburn, or spent a long weekend outdoors without adequate SPF, let us know. Sunburned or recently over-exposed skin needs a gentler approach, and we'd rather know upfront than surprise your skin mid-treatment. And that's the list. We promise we aren’t being nosy! This short list helps us ensure you get the most out of your facial. What Not to Worry About We want to be really clear about this, because we hear these concerns all the time. You do not need to arrive with a bare face. Makeup is not a problem. You do not need "good" skin to get a facial, and we never want you to feel embarrassed if your skin is having a moment. We have all been there! In fact, if you're dealing with congestion, sensitivity, dryness, or breakouts, that's exactly what we're here for: to help your skin be its best. You do not need to know what your "skin type" is. We'll assess all of that in the treatment room. You do not need to prep your skin in any special way the night before. Skipping your usual routine is not necessary and might actually irritate your skin unnecessarily before you come in. The point of a professional facial is that we guide everything. You don't have to figure it out in advance. What To Expect at Your Facial Here's the thing about facials at skin & tonic: no two are exactly alike. Before we touch your skin, we take time to understand what's going on with it today. Not what you've read online about your skin type. Not a one-size-fits-all protocol. We're looking at your actual skin, at this moment, and customizing your treatment accordingly. That means the products we use, the level of exfoliation, the mask we choose, all of it gets adjusted based on what we see and what you tell us. So if you walk in feeling like your skin is "behaving badly" or you haven't kept up with your skincare routine lately, that's okay. That's information we can work with. Be excited for some "you" time and come ready to relax! Pre Facial FAQ Should I exfoliate before my facial? No. Over-exfoliating before a facial can increase sensitivity and limit what we're able to do during your treatment. Just do what you normally would. Can I wear makeup to my facial? Yes, absolutely. We cleanse as part of the facial, so your makeup won't cause any issues at all. Do I need to tell my esthetician anything before we start? We'll ask you a few quick questions at the start of your appointment, but if you're on Accutane, a retinoid, or any other skin-affecting medication, it's great to mention that upfront. Same goes for pregnancy or significant recent sun exposure. What if I've never had a professional facial before? That makes it even more exciting! We love working with first-timers. There's nothing intimidating about it. We'll walk you through everything and make sure you leave with a clear understanding of your skin and a skincare plan to help your skin feel and look its best. How often should I get a facial? For most people, once a month is the sweet spot. This aligns with your skin's natural cell turnover cycle and gives us the consistency we need to see real progress over time. Ready to book? We're here to guide you through everything. Your skin doesn't need to be "ready," it just needs to show up.

Barrier Repair: The Secret Behind Healthy, Glowing Skin

Barrier Repair: The Secret Behind Healthy, Glowing Skin

Every year, skincare gives us a new obsession. And, while some trends are harmless (or even helpful), most of them miss one very important point: If your skin barrier isn’t healthy, nothing else works the way it should. At Skin & Tonic, we’ve quietly been focusing on barrier health long before it became a TikTok buzzword. And if there’s one “trend” we’re fully behind, it’s this one! Because this isn’t hype. It’s the science of skincare. What Is Your Skin Barrier? Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. Think of it as your built-in security system. It’s responsible for: Keeping hydration in Keeping irritants out Regulating sensitivity Supporting proper healing Maintaining smooth texture When it’s functioning properly, your skin looks calm, even, plump, and glowy. When it’s compromised, you’ll notice redness, tightness, breakouts that don’t make sense, and  increased oiliness and dehydration Sound familiar? How We Accidentally Damage Our Skin Barrier Modern skincare culture has pushed intensity. More actives, stronger peels, daily exfoliation, and layering multiple acids and retinol all can cause skin damage.  While we use and love active ingredients, they must be balanced with barrier support. We see it often in our facial clients - skin that’s not “acne-prone” or “aging”, just overworked. The barrier gets thin. Inflammation increases. Pigmentation becomes more stubborn. Breakouts linger longer… ...And then people think they need even stronger products. It’s a cycle. Fortunately, there is a better way. Why Barrier Repair Is Smart Skincare Here’s what happens when we shift our focus to strengthening our skin barrier instead of stripping it: Inflammation decreases Pigment responds better to treatment Fine lines soften naturally Oil production balances Products penetrate more effectively At Skin & Tonic Raleigh, many of our customized treatments prioritize rebuilding before resurfacing, especially during seasonal transitions. Because correcting from a compromised barrier is slow, and correcting from a strong barrier is so much easier. Barrier Repair Doesn’t Mean “Stop Everything” This is where the trend sometimes gets misunderstood. Barrier repair doesn’t mean abandoning the skincare that is already working. It means creating balance. That might look like: Reducing exfoliation frequency Supporting the skin with ceramides and lipids Using antioxidant protection (especially as UV exposure increases) Layering hydration properly Customizing treatments instead of overdoing them It’s not about doing nothing, it’s about doing the right things with the right frequency. The Spring Shift (Without the Drama) As we move toward warmer weather in Raleigh, this is actually the perfect time to assess barrier health. Winter can leave skin dehydrated, dull, reactive, and slightly inflamed. Before increasing active ingredients for that summer glow, focusing on strengthening first creates better long-term results. This is why many of our skincare clients see more progress when we recalibrate their routines seasonally instead of intensifying them. What Barrier-Focused Treatments Look Like at Skin & Tonic Our Raleigh Skincare Studio clients trust barrier-supportive treatments, including: Controlled, strategic exfoliation Deep hydration layering Lipid replenishment Calming, anti-inflammatory ingredients Personalized adjustments based on how your skin is behaving in real time You won’t find cookie-cutter facials or over-aggressive protocols here! Just skin that’s nourished and supported for a healthy, long-term glow. The Real Glow-Up The irony is, when you stop aggressively chasing glow… you get glow. Healthy barriers reflect light better. They hold hydration better. They tolerate corrective treatments better. That soft, even, lit-from-within look everyone wants? It starts with structure. Barrier repair isn’t flashy. But it will make everything else in your routine work better. And that’s why at Skin & Tonic, we will always look after the health of your skin barrier so you can enjoy healthy, glowy skin year-round.

Chemical or Mineral Sunscreen: Which Is Actually Better for Your Skin?

Chemical or Mineral Sunscreen: Which Is Actually Better for Your Skin?

The weather is warming up, and that can mean only one thing. It’s time to talk Sunscreen! If you’ve ever wondered what the difference is between chemical and mineral sunscreen, you’re not alone. And yes, they really are completely different. At skin&tonic, we believe summer skincare should feel simple, effective, and supportive of your long-term glow. So today, we’re breaking down the difference between chemical vs. mineral sunscreen and why we’re proudly team mineral in our treatment rooms. First Things First: Why Is Sunscreen Non-Negotiable? If you take one thing from this post, let it be this: Sunscreen is not optional. Daily sunscreen is the foundation of smart summer skincare. It protects against: Premature aging Hyperpigmentation Collagen breakdown Skin cancer Post-facial sensitivity damage You can have the most advanced serums in your routine, but without sunscreen? They can’t do their job properly. At skin&tonic, we consider sunscreen your skin’s daily insurance policy. What Does SPF Actually Mean? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it tells you how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays (the type responsible for sunburn). Here’s the simple breakdown: SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays No sunscreen blocks 100% of the sun’s rays, which is why reapplication is just as important as the SPF number itself. At skin&tonic, we typically recommend using at least SPF 30 every single day, even when it’s cloudy or you’re mostly indoors. UV exposure adds up over time, and daily protection is one of the most powerful steps you can take for long-term skin health. UVA vs UVB: Why Broad-Spectrum Protection Matters Not all UV rays affect your skin the same way. There are two types you need to know about: UVB Rays: The Burning Rays UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and damage in the skin. They’re the primary rays measured by SPF ratings. UVA Rays: The Aging Rays UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are responsible for: Premature aging Wrinkles and loss of collagen Hyperpigmentation and dark spots Long-term skin damage Unlike UVB rays, UVA rays are present all year long and can even penetrate through clouds and windows. That’s why when choosing sunscreen for your skincare routine, it’s important to look for the words: “Broad Spectrum Protection.” Broad-spectrum SPF means the product protects against both UVA and UVB rays, giving your skin the full protection it needs. The Two Types of Sunscreen 1. Chemical Sunscreen Chemical sunscreens include ingredients like: Avobenzone Oxybenzone Octisalate Octinoxate Homosalate How they work:They absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin. What to know: Must be applied 15–30 minutes before sun exposure. Can sometimes cause irritation or breakouts (especially on sensitive or acne-prone skin). Some ingredients have raised environmental concerns (like coral reef impact). Many people love chemical sunscreens for their lightweight feel and invisible finish. But in our treatment rooms, we often see reactive skin that doesn’t love them back. 2. Mineral Sunscreen Mineral sunscreens use: Zinc oxide Titanium dioxide How they work:They sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays away from the surface. Honestly, we’re firmly team mineral sunscreen at skin&tonic, especially formulas using non-nano zinc oxide. Why? Because zinc doesn’t just protect. It supports skin health. Why We Recommend Mineral Sunscreen at Skin & Tonic After years of treating all types of skin, here’s what we’ve seen: Zinc is calming and anti-inflammatory. It helps reduce redness, supports acne-prone skin, provides true broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, and works immediately upon application. Unlike older mineral formulas that felt thick or chalky, modern zinc-based sunscreen blends beautifully into the skin. No ghostly cast. No heavy texture. Just breathable, skin-supportive protection. For summer skincare (when heat, sweat, and sun exposure are higher) mineral sunscreen tends to behave better on sensitive or breakout-prone skin. So… Which Sunscreen Should You Choose? If your skin is resilient and you’ve never had issues with chemical sunscreens, you may do just fine with them. But if you: Break out easily Have sensitive or reactive skin Struggle with rosacea Invest in facials, peels, or your skincare routine Care about reef-conscious formulas A mineral sunscreen is likely your best match. And when it comes to summer skincare, protecting your investment (and your collagen) is the move. Our Final Thoughts At skin&tonic, we don’t just recommend any products, we recommend what we see working every single day in the treatment room. Sunscreen is the most important step in your routine. Mineral sunscreens support your skin while protecting it, encouraging consistency in your sunscreen routine. And consistency will always beat intensity. If you’re unsure which sunscreen is right for your skin, ask your esthetician at your next appointment or reach out to us anytime. We’re always happy to talk about summer skincare and help you build a routine that truly works. Join us on team sunscreen, and protect your glow year round.

Your Hands Called. They Want Better Skincare: Introducing PAUME.

Your Hands Called. They Want Better Skincare: Introducing PAUME.

Quick question: when was the last time you showed your hands the same love you give your face? If your answer is “…never?” you are not alone. And honestly? We see it all the time in the treatment rooms. This is exactly why we’re so excited to introduce PAUME, a brand we’re officially welcoming into our Skin & Tonic studio this month. This one feels like a natural next step for us. Thoughtful. Elevated. Practical. A little luxurious without being fussy. And, most importantly: necessary! Meet PAUME: Skincare, For Your Hands PAUME is essentially skincare for your hands, and once you hear that, it kind of clicks instantly. Your hands are exposed to the sun, water, soap, sanitizer, and environmental stress constantly. They age fast and dry out easily, and yet they’re usually an afterthought. PAUME flips that script. Everything in the line is formulated with the same care you’d expect from high-quality facial skincare. Think hydration, barrier support, gentle exfoliation, and microbiome-friendly ingredients specifically designed for hands (and in some cases, feet). All of PAUME’s products share the same light, clean essential oil blend. It’s subtle, fresh, and universally appealing. Nothing overpowering and nothing that will clash with your favourite fragrance. It’s clean, soft, and elevated. Why We Added PAUME to Skin & Tonic Care for the hands comes up more often than you might expect in our treatment rooms, especially concerns around dryness, sun damage, and visible signs of aging. We wanted to offer something more intentional than “just a hand cream,” and PAUME immediately stood out as a brand that treats hands with the same level of care as the facial products we know and love. Our introduction to PAUME was personal (the overnight hand and foot mask came home with us on vacation and absolutely delivered), and from there, the rest of the line quickly earned our attention. The renewing hand serum, exfoliating cleanser, probiotic hand balm, and moisturizing antibacterial hand gel all fill everyday needs we hadn’t fully offered to our clients before now. These products are effective, easy to use, and feel genuinely elevated. Let’s Walk Through the Lineup Here’s what you’ll start seeing on our shelves very soon, and why we’re excited about each one. Renewing Hand Serum Think of this as facial serum energy, but specifically for your hands. PAUME’s Renewing Hand Serum is lightweight, fast-absorbing, and designed to target the most common concerns we see (think dryness, uneven tone, and early signs of aging). Bursting with  favourite skincare ingredients like Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid, it delivers concentrated hydration and skin-renewing ingredients deep into the skin. Your hands will look smoother, brighter, and more refined over time. What really sets it apart is how treatment-focused it feels; it sinks in immediately, layers beautifully under a balm or cream, and doesn’t leave behind any residue. It’s an easy daily step that makes a noticeable difference, especially if hand aging is something you’ve started to notice.   Exfoliating Hand Cleanser This is one of those products that instantly upgrades something you already do every day. The Exfoliating Hand Cleanser uses plant based cleansers and cellulose microbeads to gently remove buildup and dead skin while cleansing, leaving your hands noticeably smoother without that tight, stripped feeling traditional soaps can cause. The exfoliation is effective but not aggressive, which means it helps improve texture and allows serums and balms to absorb better afterward. We love this as a simple swap at your sink, turning hand washing into a small but meaningful skincare moment and setting the foundation for healthier-looking hands long-term.   Probiotic Hand Balm This is your go-to for barrier repair and long-lasting hydration. The Probiotic Hand Balm is rich, nourishing, and deeply comforting, but still absorbs beautifully without feeling greasy. Its natural probiotics support the skin’s microbiome while helping restore moisture and protect against everyday stressors like frequent washing and sanitizer use. The pump packaging makes it incredibly practical for kitchens, bathrooms, or bedside tables, and the texture strikes that perfect balance between indulgent and wearable. It’s one of those products you’ll reach for constantly once it’s in your routine.   Moisturizing Antibacterial Hand Gel If traditional hand sanitizers have ever wrecked your hands, this one will feel like a revelation. PAUME’s Moisturizing Antibacterial Hand Gel effectively sanitizes while actively hydrating and supporting the skin barrier, instead of drying it out. It leaves hands clean, soft, and sanitized, never sticky or tight. This is one of those products that fits seamlessly into everyday life and solves a real problem, which is why it’s such an easy recommendation for us.   Overnight Hand & Foot Hydration Mask Packed with powerhouses like Panthenol and Squalane, this is the ultimate reset for dry, tired hands and feet. The Overnight Hand & Foot Hydration Mask works while you sleep, when skin is most receptive to repair, delivering deep nourishment and restoring softness by morning. The texture is rich without being heavy, and when paired with the organic cotton gloves or socks, the results are genuinely noticeable after just one use. It’s perfect for anyone dealing with chronic dryness or anyone who wants to turn hand and foot care into a simple, restorative ritual.   Cleansing Hand & Body Wipes Cleanse hydrate and refresh your hands on the go. These wipes are thoughtfully created to be gentle, effective, and elevated. They  use plant based cleansers to cleanse your hands and body when soap and water aren’t available. Plus, thanks to the addition of Safflower Oleosomes, they leave your hands feeling hydrated. Perfect for travel, moms,  gym bags, errands, or the car, they’re one of those low-effort products that end up being surprisingly essential.     Organic Cotton Gloves & Socks Sometimes the simplest tools make the biggest difference. These organic cotton gloves and socks are designed to enhance absorption when using the overnight mask or hand balm, helping products work more effectively while you sleep. Or, if sleeping in them just isn’t your thing, wear them for at least 15 minutes to occlude the creme before removing. They’re breathable, comfortable, and turn basic care into a true treatment moment, especially for anyone serious about repairing dry hands or feet.    Can’t wait to try PAUME?
