How to Incorporate Lotion P50 into Your Daily Skincare Routine

You have heard about Lotion P50 from Biologique Recherche. Maybe a friend mentioned it, maybe you stumbled across it online, or maybe your esthetician has been recommending it for months. Either way, you are here, and you want to know exactly how to work it into your current skincare routine.

Good news: Lotion P50 is one of the more forgiving actives to introduce, as long as you do it thoughtfully. Here is everything you need to know.

The TL;DR on Using Lotion P50

Use Lotion P50 after cleansing, on a cotton pad, pressed gently into the skin. Start every other evening and build up from there. Follow with hydration, moisturizer, and SPF in the morning. Give it at least six weeks before you judge the results.

Now, let’s get into the full details you need to know for optimal success when adding Lotion P50 to your skincare routine.

Start Here: Choose the Right P50 Version First

Before we talk about how to use Lotion P50, we need to talk about which Lotion P50. This is genuinely the most important step, and the one most people skip.

There are five versions in the Lotion P50 family, each formulated for a different skin type and tolerance level. Using the wrong one is the most common reason people have a bad first experience with this product.

Not sure which one is right for you? That is exactly what we are here for. Book a Consultation and we will point you in the right direction before you spend a cent.

When to Use Lotion P50 in Your Routine

Lotion P50 is used after cleansing and before everything else. Think of it as the second step in your routine, sitting between your cleanser and your serums.

The full order looks like this:

Cleanser, Lotion P50, Serum, Moisturizer, SPF (daytime).

That's it. Simple. Lotion P50 does not need to be complicated to work. Its job is to prep the skin so that everything applied after it absorbs more effectively. This is one of the reasons clients often notice their whole routine performing better after adding it in.

How to Apply Lotion P50 Correctly

This matters more than most people realize. The application method affects both how well the product works and how your skin responds to it.

Pour a small amount, roughly the size of a 20-cent piece, onto a cotton pad. You do not need to saturate it. Less is genuinely more here.

Rather than wiping the pad across your face, press and lightly sweep it upward and outward across the skin. Work from the center of the face outward, moving up toward the hairline on the cheeks and forehead, and down toward the jaw and neck. Avoid the eye area entirely.

Do not rinse it off. Do not rub it in. Apply it, let it absorb for about 30 seconds, and then continue with your routine.

How Often Should You Use Lotion P50?

Start with every other day, and build from there.

This is where most people go wrong. They add Lotion P50 every day from day one, experience redness or sensitivity, and assume the product is not right for them. In some cases, the product was right, but the skin simply needed more time to adjust. In other cases,  they should be using a different P50 version.

Weeks 1 to 2: Every other evening. Watch how your skin responds.

Weeks 3 to 4: If your skin is tolerating it well, move to every evening.

Beyond that: Many clients use Lotion P50 twice daily, morning and evening. This is fine for skin that has built up a solid tolerance, but daily use is effective for most people and there is no need to rush to twice daily.

The rule of thumb: if your skin is happy, you can increase frequency. If it shows signs of irritation (persistent redness, tightness, or sensitivity that does not settle), pull back and give it more time. Talk to your esthetician about what’s happening so that they can make adjustments accordingly.

Morning or Evening?

Both work, but evening is a good place to start.

Your skin does most of its repair work overnight, and using Lotion P50 in the evening means it has time to do its job without immediate sun exposure. That said, many people use it in the morning without any issues, as long as they follow up with SPF, which is non-negotiable when you are using any exfoliating product.

What to Pair With Lotion P50

Pairing Lotion P50 with the right products helps you get the most out of it while keeping your skin balanced.

Your cleanser matters. Use something gentle before applying Lotion P50. A harsh or stripping cleanser will compromise your barrier before the P50 even touches your skin, which increases the chance of sensitivity. A gentle micellar water or a soft milky cleanser like Biologique Recherche’s Lait VIP 02  is ideal.

Follow with hydration. After applying Lotion P50, reach for a hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid is a great option) before your moisturizer. Lotion P50 is exfoliating, not moisturizing, and your skin will absorb hydration beautifully right after application.

Always follow with SPF in the morning. Exfoliating acids increase your skin's sensitivity to UV exposure. If you are using Lotion P50 in the morning, sunscreen is not optional. We recommend a mineral-based SPF 30 or higher. We typically recommend Suntegrity and Solara Skincare products for our clients. If you want additional guidance on which sunscreen to pair with your routine, ask your esthetician.

Be careful with other actives. If your routine already includes a retinoid, a strong vitamin C, or other exfoliating acids, you will want to be thoughtful about how you layer everything. Adding Lotion P50 on top of an already active-heavy routine can push the skin past its tolerance. This is one of the conversations worth having with your esthetician before you start.

Should Lotion P50 Make My Skin Tingle?

A mild tingling sensation is completely normal, especially in the first week or two. This is the product working and usually settles as your skin adjusts.

What is not normal however, is burning, persistent redness, or sensitivity that gets worse rather than better. If you experience any of these, reduce frequency, consider switching to a gentler version, or reach out to us so we can help you troubleshoot.

Many clients notice smoother texture within the first two to three weeks. More significant improvements in tone, clarity, and pore appearance tend to build over six to twelve weeks of consistent use. Lotion P50 is a long-game product, and the results reflect genuine skin health changes rather than a surface-level fix.

A Note on the Smell

Yes, it smells unusual. Distinctive might be the polite word. This surprises a lot of first-time users.

The smell comes from some of the active ingredients, including sulfur in the original formula. It dissipates quickly and does not linger on the skin, but if it catches you off guard the first time, that is completely normal. Give it a chance. Trust the results.

And, if you are not sure which version to start with, or how to fit it into what you are already using, we are always here to help.
